Letting the Breath Find You
With Lizzie Lasater
Sitting silently doing nothing, Spring comes,
and the grass grows by itself. ~ Zen Proverb
Pranayama is often taught as a way to restrict the breath, using complex counting methods to achieve increasingly long holds. This focus on control could lead to hardening, for some. And practicing this way misses the delicious truth that the breath is breathing you.
In this workshop we shift our perspective: the breath becomes active, and you become receptive, soft.
New scientific research confirms what yogis have long known: slow breathing significantly benefits our blood chemistry, emotional states, and overall health. Specifically, the vagus nerves connect our most ancient brain structures (think hormonal and emotional regulation) with our heart and lungs. Thus we can use breath practices to improve our responsiveness and recovery.
We’ll begin with some active Asana, moving the body with a special focus on opening the front, side, and back lungs. Then we’ll transition through Restorative yoga, inviting parasympathetic dominance, so that your energetic body is ready to receive the gift of conscious breath.
All levels. Please bring an eye cover, two blankets, a notebook, and dress warmly.
Tip: the weekend before this workshop Lizzie offers her Restorative Yoga Training.
