Anatomy, Physiology & Intelligent Alignment
This module deepens the understanding of functional anatomy, biomechanics, and therapeutic yoga applications. Through hands-on exploration and practical tools, teachers will learn how movement influences muscles, joints, and the nervous system, particularly through the Vagus nerve, and how to apply alignment principles for injury prevention and enhanced well-being.
Practical and Profound
The Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga
UPPER BODY, SHOULDERS & FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH
Understanding the anatomy & biomechanics of the upper body is important since modern practice loads the wrists, shoulders and spine more than any other part of the body. We will cover things like:
The shoulder girdle: how wrists, elbows, and shoulders work together; Common restrictions and misalignments in the upper body; Strength vs. mobility: unlocking range of motion safely.
Functional Alignment & Injury Prevention
How to stabilize the shoulders in weight-bearing postures (Chaturanga, Downward Dog, Arm Balances).; Preventing repetitive strain injuries (wrist pain, rotator cuff issues).; Prop-based modifications to support different body types.
Therapeutic Adjustments & Hands-On Practice
Safe hands-on techniques for guiding students into optimal alignment; Using verbal adjustments to refine movement patterns ; Partner work: refining observation skills for common misalignments.
SPINE, SACRUM & BREATH AS THE CORE OF STABILITY
We can live without our legs or arms, but not our torso. Explore the principles of spinal health, gut health and the interconnection with the breath and nervious system in all classes of asana.
The Spine in Motion: Key Principles
Understanding spinal undulation: its role in breath, posture, and movement; How spinal health impacts mental clarity and nervous system balance ; The sacrum’s role in stability: SI joint considerations for pain-free movement
The Gut & The Energetics of Twists & Forward Bends
The yogic perspective on digestion and the gut’s role in Autonomic Nervous System, Immune system, & emotional states; How twists & forward bends stimulate digestion and hormonal balance; Samana Vayu: the energetic force governing balance in digestion & assimilation.
Breathwork & Nervous System Regulation
Exploring the Vagus nerve and breath’s role in relaxation & resilience; The role of Mudra and Drishthi in supporting pranayama work and self-regulation; Pranayama techniques to enhance spinal mobility and stability; The impact of breath-led movement on mental focus and emotional balance.

JOINTS, MOBILITY & THE WISDOM OF THE VAYUS
The true power of yoga practice and its therapeutic value goes beyond muscles and joints. It influences the nervous system — particularly through the Vagus nerve — in ways that touch every level of our health and well-being.
Lower Body & Joint Health
Feet, knees, and hips: their influence on flexibility & movement patterns; Understanding how restrictions in the feet impact the spine & hamstrings; Practical tools to improve mobility and address sciatic pain.
The Vayus & Therapeutic Movement Insights
Vyana Vayu: its role in joint health, muscle stiffness & pain patterns; The peripheral nervous system’s role in regulating flexibility; How neuromuscular patterns affect range of motion & injury risk.
Breath & Fascia: The Hidden Connections
The role of fascia & connective tissue in asana practice; Myofascial release techniques to restore movement efficiency; How breathwork enhances fascia elasticity and reduces chronic tension.

“Doug connects the science of anatomy and physiology to the ancient wisdom of yoga. It maken it all so logic what we experience. I even use his teachings in my medical practice.”
“Ik vond de workshops fantastisch. De dagen zitten tjokvol met kennis die ik direct kan gebruiken in mijn lessen maar ook voor mijn eigen practice...het een fijne combinatie is tussen theorie en praktijk... ”
