Aerial yoga: New Experiences
While simply swinging back and forth, I noticed an uncontrollable smile arise on my face. My first aerial class brought me back in touch with an old sense of playfulness and pure joy.
Since Aerial is a relatively new form of yoga, it’s normal to be curious and unsure about it. My name is Kate and I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years. Nonetheless, I just took an aerial class for the first time. It was fun and exciting, and yes, there were points where I felt like I was actually flying!
Expectations
Prior to taking the class, I was contemplating whether or not Aerial yoga would be too difficult or complex for me. This was far from the case. In fact, the class started seated on the mat, just like in any other yoga class. We took a few moments to sync the body and breath, while also setting an intention of peace to carry with us. Then it was time to start using the hammock! As we sequenced through various poses, I realized that my expectations of Aerial yoga were completely different from reality. Instead of needing to be naturally flexible, I learned that the hammock acts as an assistance, to deepen my stretch. Likewise, I didn’t need to be coordinated like a dancer, but just listen and follow the teacher’s cues. After only one class, I went from thinking Aerial wasn’t for me, to planning to make it a part of my routine. This was a perfect example of the beauty of new experiences.
Beginner’s Mind
Perhaps a part of my positive experience with Aerial is due to the open mindset I had. It’s easy to unintentionally go on auto-pilot, turning into a ‘yoga robot’ of sorts. Part of the fun of Aerial Yoga was that it required me to pay close attention to the new sequences and especially the transitions between poses. Throughout the 75 minute class, I encountered common poses in a new way, like warrior 3, tree pose, and cobbler's pose. I have done countless downward facing dogs throughout my yoga journey thus far, and yet it felt completely new with the support of the hammock.
Good to Know
Although the overall experience was positive, I did think of a few things that would have been nice to know beforehand. The main point that I’d like to share is that the hammock can be uncomfortable at times, and that’s ok. With this in mind, you can remain aware of your body in each pose and decide for yourself if the discomfort is manageable or if it’s a better idea to take a break.
General Tips
Keep a curious mindset
Have grace with yourself as you need to become familiar with working with the hammock.
Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher for help.
When I told the teacher that it was my first aerial class, she was very friendly and helpful. Before the class, she helped me adjust my hammock height to fit with my body. Also, during the class she made recommendations for variations since I hadn’t done it before.
Arrive Early
Try to arrive 5 - 10 minutes earlier than you would for a regular yoga class. This will give you enough time to adjust your hammock.
Find your appropriate edge.
There were a few times when I was unsure if I could or should do an aerial pose. Some of the poses may look beautiful and impressive, but it can be more beneficial to stay true to your body’s capabilities in the present moment.

This is the final and most important tip for taking your first aerial class. Just experience it in the present moment, smile and laugh, and let yourself enjoy.
